Additional Notes

This self-shot portrait was done in a small room in my apartment, camera was on a tripod with a wireless shutter release and a flash trigger.

The secret to controlling the light in this shot is that I used a 16-degree flash grid on the flash. I have also zoomed the flash to the maximum 105mm so less light would be "wasted".
The light from the flash hit a white wall behind the camera and bounced some light back onto my face and onto a window that was behind me.
The reflection on the window was distracting so I added a black reflector on a stand. The reflector eliminated that reflection and I have achieved the mysterious shot I was going for.

Lens: Canon 85mm F/1.8
Flash: Yongnuo YN-565EX
