I dont think you strobe came into full effect in this pic, you were way over thee max Sync speed, which i think for the D7000 is 1/250 (1/320 with FP)... you shot at 1/800...
unless there is something i missed...

I do not know Nikon CLS system, but.. E-System (Olympus) is able to fire a remote non system, or system flash via built-in flash using FP mode - up to 1/4000-1/8000.

I tried to do this shot different times and also only with natural light, the only thing I can say is that the flash fired and affected the final result lightening the shadows a lot.

2 Marco: Yes it is clearly visible that there is a lot of light coming from below.

Additional Notes

In the scene there was hard sunlight and I used a strobe with softbox to lighten the shadows on the model's face, I placed the strobe at ground level while the camera is higher and pointed down at the subject.
